Helps with the speed of loading the page especially when users are utilizing smartphones.

.jpg files do not support transparent backgrounds whereas .png does. .jpg files do not blend into webpages with different background colors.
.jpg is good for actual pictures and .png is better for graphics (ex: logo).

Standard is 72 ppi (pixels per inch).
